Again, I'm pretty sure this is too unstructured to be anything formal, but discussion is welcome. Spoilers for last season, this season, and probably the show in general. Three convenient sections in case one appeals to you more than the others.

So there was some drama yesterday on one of the communities I follow, essentially regarding concrit and what, exactly, makes for too much. (If you recognise the incident, please don't reference it specifically; I'm attempting to preserve anonymity, even if it turns out to be ultimately a token effort.) The basic gist: an author posted a chapter of fic and received comments that said the premise was strong and had promise, but the author might want to consider a beta, as some of the grammatical inaccuracies detracted from the fic. I caught only the opening and closing portions of this issue and missed everything in the middle, but the author ended up by disabling comments on the community entry and saying the comments were unreasonable, that if she wanted a beta she'd have found one. She went on to state in a public entry in her journal that she was having a bad time in general, and the negative comments didn't help, especially with a piece to which she was attached.

This led me to start thinking about my own expectations--of my readers, of myself as a writer, of the writers whose work I read.
